While there are a great deal of similarities between kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu, there are also a number of differences. While both forms of martial arts can be used for self-defense purposes, they do focus more on techniques which allow the practitioner to move freely. The striking techniques in kickboxing are primarily geared towards achieving this. There are no joint locks involved in the striking methods in either kickboxing or Jiu Jitsu. For this reason, people who practice either martial art but are not looking to participate in a sparring match are usually encouraged to engage in MMA or compete in other competitions, since the striking techniques of both are very dynamic.

One of the most noticeable differences between kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu is the clothing. While most styles require some form of uniform, only the very minimal is required in kickboxing. Since kicks are a main method of attacking an opponent in either martial art, most competitions will require at least some form of protective gear. This gear is usually thicker than that used in martial arts such as Taekwondo and Judo, which helps prevent the possibility of injury.

Because there is no uniform standard when it comes to kicking, strikes can be performed in a wide variety of ways. The primary weapon in modern day kickboxing is often sticks, though there are also various types of boxing bags and other fighting gear used in kickboxing matches. In contrast, most martial arts uniforms are full body suits that cover the entire body from head to toe.

Though both arts can be vigorous and exciting, they also have their differences. Martial arts enthusiasts will quickly find out that kickboxing is by far the more fun of the two.
